B-2 Visa: Visitor for Pleasure

The B-2 visa is designed for individuals planning to visit the United States temporarily for tourism, social visits, medical treatment, or participation in certain non-professional events. The applicant must demonstrate that their visit is purely temporary and that they intend to depart the U.S. after their stay.

Who Qualifies for a B-2 Visa?

The B-2 category is appropriate for:

  • Tourism and leisure travel
  • Visiting family and friends in the U.S.
  • Receiving medical treatment at a U.S. facility
  • Participation in amateur sports, music, or cultural events (without compensation)
  • Accompanying a qualifying B-1 visa holder
  • Domestic partners of U.S. visa holders who are not in a legally recognized marriage

Duration of Stay & Extensions

B-2 visitors are typically admitted for up to six months. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the port of entry may issue a shorter duration based on the purpose of travel, U.S. travel history, and other factors.

Extensions beyond the initial period may be possible, but applicants must demonstrate a valid reason consistent with B-2 requirements, such as ongoing medical treatment or unexpected delays in travel plans.

B-2 Visa Requirements

In addition to the general requirements for U.S. visitor visas, B-2 applicants must demonstrate:

  • Intent for a temporary stay – The visit must be solely for tourism, medical care, or other permitted activities.
  • Strong ties to their home country – Proof of employment, property ownership, family relationships, or other factors ensuring their return.
  • Financial ability to support themselves – Proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses during their stay.
  • Medical treatment cases – Documentation from a U.S. healthcare provider detailing the need for treatment and financial arrangements for medical costs.
